Google Business Profile Optimisation for Hong Kong SMEs: Seven Steps

Your Google Business Profile drives Maps visibility, the info panel in search, and the local facts AI assistants quote. Seven steps: duplicates, primary category, consistent NAP, photos, services and Q&A, a review process, and how to read the results.

Your Google Business Profile is free, and it drives three things at once: Maps visibility, the info panel beside search results, and the local facts AI assistants quote. Most Hong Kong SMEs spend tens of thousands on a website and never touch it.

The result: when a customer searches for your service nearby, they see a competitor’s photos, a competitor’s reviews and a competitor’s opening hours.

Step 1: Make sure you own the right listing

Duplicates are common — a moved office, a renamed shop, a listing created by a former employee. Duplicates split your reviews and your visibility.

  • Search your company name on Google Maps and check whether more than one result exists.

  • Report duplicates as “duplicate location” and keep the most complete record.

  • Confirm the owner is your company’s Google account, not an agency’s or an ex-employee’s personal account.

Step 2: One primary category, and the right one

The primary category carries the most weight because it tells Google what you are. Many businesses pick the closest industry rather than the most accurate one.

A web design and systems company should be “Website designer” or “Software company”, not “Marketing consultant”. A hardware shop selling parts is a “Hardware store”, not a “Building materials supplier”.

How to decide: search your main service term on Maps and look at the category used by the businesses ranking above you. That is a market-tested answer.

Step 3: Address, service area and phone must match your website exactly

Inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone) is the most common local ranking penalty. Your footer says “XX Street, Kowloon” and the profile says “1 XX Street” — identical to a human, two different records to a machine.

  • Name: the real company name. Keyword stuffing (“ABC Design — Web Design SEO Expert”) is a violation.

  • Phone: one number, local format with +852.

  • If you have no shopfront and work on-site or online, hide the address and set a service area instead.

Step 4: Opening hours and special hours

Wrong hours affect the “open now” filter and send customers to a closed door. Update Lunar New Year and public holidays individually.

For appointment-only businesses, state “appointment required” in the description to cut wasted calls.

Step 5: Take your own photos

  • Shopfront or entrance, so people recognise the place

  • Interior, one or two wide shots

  • The team at work

  • Products or finished work, close up

One or two uploads a month beats fifty in one go. Use simple English filenames, not IMG_2847.

Step 6: Services, products and Q&A

These three sections are usually empty, and they are free keyword space.

  • Services: list what you actually sell, about 100 words each, including the words customers use.

  • Products: physical products can carry prices and photos straight into results.

  • Q&A: ask and answer the three to five questions you get most — price range, appointments, parking, payment methods.

Step 7: Make reviews a process

  1. Send the review link on WhatsApp the same day the job is done.

  2. Get the link from the profile dashboard: “Get more reviews”, copy the short link.

  3. Reply to everything, including negative reviews. Stick to facts and what you will do about it.

Do not buy reviews. Google filters clusters of accounts with no other activity, and it can affect the trust score of the whole profile. Bought reviews do not help rankings.

Step 8: How to tell whether it worked

The performance tab gives four numbers: searches, map views, calls and direction requests.

  • Searches up, calls flat: the listing is complete but there is no reason to act — add a clear next step.

  • Direction requests high while you sell online only: the category or service area is wrong.

  • Compare quarterly, not weekly. Local search moves with seasonality and competitors.

Frequently asked

Can I have a profile without a shopfront?

Yes, using service-area mode with the address hidden. Purely online businesses may not qualify at all — Google requires face-to-face contact with customers. Using a home address has privacy implications; a registered office or co-working address is usually better, if the building allows it.

How does this relate to SEO?

It is a major local ranking factor and it shapes the panel shown for brand searches. It does not directly lift content page rankings.

How long until results?

Weeks for completeness and photos, months for reviews. Do not expect a week.

Should I pay for ads?

Fix the free things first. Paid local ads make sense once you already get steady map views but no calls — at that point the problem is persuasion, not reach.

Can I hire someone to manage it?

Yes, but keep ownership in your company. The classic problem with managed profiles is discovering, when you want to switch, that you are not the owner.

Next step

If your site has no LocalBusiness schema, the profile and the website cannot corroborate each other. That is technical SEO — see our SEO service, or use the calculator to size the work.
