If your SEO strategy is still "write more keywords, buy more backlinks", 2026 will show you diminishing returns fast. Search behavior has changed, but many brands' SEO is still stuck in 2018.
How search changed
Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT now summarize answers at the top of results. Getting an answer went from "click + read" to "zero-click".
That's not bad news for brands — because AI needs to cite sources, and well-structured, credible websites are the best candidates.
New rules: structure beats density
- One clear topic per page with a proper heading hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3)
- Answer questions directly — one point per paragraph
- Schema.org markup (FAQ, HowTo, Organization) helps AI understand you
- Real data, real case studies — AI prefers content with evidence
Metrics change too
Not ranking #1 doesn't mean failure. Watch instead:
- AI mentions: how often your brand appears in AI answers
- Zero-click impressions: citations inside AI summaries
- Entity association: does Google know who you are, what you do, where you are
