An uncomfortable opening: no SEO tool will rank you. Tools help you see faster and miss less. You can pay for five of them and see no movement, or use two free ones and get most of the work done.
Four categories, four problems
1. Keyword and demand research
Answers “what should we write”. You need the phrases customers type, how often, and what they want afterwards. Most data here is estimated — trust the direction, not the absolute number.
2. Technical auditing
Answers “can Google get in”. Crawls your site and lists dead links, duplicate titles, missing descriptions, slow pages. The most useful category, because the problems are concrete and finishable.
3. Rank and traffic tracking
Answers “is anything moving”. Daily fluctuation is normal; watch the trend, not the day.
4. Content and AI citations
Answers “are we being quoted”. In 2026 there is an extra layer: whether AI answers mention you. There is still no reliable measurement for this; most tools estimate.
Where free is enough
Google Search Console: your actual queries, impressions, clicks, index status. The most honest data you will get, because Google is the source
Analytics: what people do after they arrive
Page speed testing
For one website and one business, those three will carry you for a while.
When paying makes sense
You need to audit hundreds of pages at once
You are tracking dozens of keywords
You must report to a client or a boss in a fixed format
You need to see competitors, not just yourself
A sensible setup for a Hong Kong SME
Layer one (free): Search Console and analytics; three months of real data first
Layer two (one paid tool): exactly one, for technical audits and keyword research. Not three on day one
Layer three (as needed): content and rank tracking, once output is steady
One paid tool plus discipline beats five tools and no execution.
When not to buy
You have no steady content output — the tool will only find more things you will not do
Your site is under twenty pages — manual review is faster
Search Console is not installed yet
Last word
The value of a tool is whether you finish one cycle every month: read the data, change one page, look again. If you never finish the cycle, the price of the tool does not matter.
If you want to know whether your current setup is wasted spend, book a 30-minute call. Prices are on the pricing page.
